I am grateful for ...

My parents. For being not only such stellar parents, but humans beings at such a high level I don't believe I can ever truly emulate. But darned if I won't try!

Watched: "Mermaids: The Body Found". Entertaining and better than I thought it would be.

Life of Pi is spectacular and beautiful and thought provoking and heart breaking. But hopeful. My very, very favorite plot point is that the end is NOT a twist -- it's almost a double twist. And it makes you believe in God :-)

And tigers most certainly have souls. All animals do. They just have "animal" souls. And every living thing has its place in the ever after. Including Richard Parker.

I know the end scene is supposed to be sad, with R.P. just jumping into the jungle .. but think about the tiger for a moment -- all that time on a boat, in an environment so bizarre and foreign, and he encounters home. After all this time. And he stops, and just looks. It's a moment beautiful captured on film. He breaks Pi's heart simply because he is a wild animal. It is a huge mistake to view an animal as having the same emotions as our own ... but likewise a mistake to believe they have no emotions (or "soul") of their own. They are different to us, and thus mysterious. Some animals can interact on something approaching our level, especially domestic animals. Witness the "lion man" lying down with his lions and hyenas (both highly social animals).

(Which makes me think .. know what would be a really interesting story? "Life of Pi" from the point of view of the tiger!)

"Life of Pi" makes us believe in God. And I believe in a higher realm than this Pi and Richard Parker will finally be able to interact meaningfully on a beautiful cosmic level.

Animals have souls. James Herriot says so. ♥
